Judge Rules That State Pays for Sex Change

I had some major pronouns usage fails direct toward the trans woman in the matter at hand…and I apologize for that because that may seem hypocritical and inconsiderate….that was not my intention…

A federal court judge on Tuesday ordered Massachusetts officials to provide sex-reassignment surgery for a transsexual prison inmate, Michelle Kosilek, after determining that it was the only adequate treatment for the inmate’s mental illness.

  2. Don’t feel too bad, Diamond.. . I myself (and you know I should know better) sometimes have difficulty remembering my “PC”-ness when I come up against topics that involve a transwoman who pre-transition has a life that includes marriage to a bio woman; we tend sometimes to forget that the ‘T’ includes a variety of sexual orientations, stuck as we can be in a “binary gender” mentality that we’ve been raised with…

Regarding the legal issue of the “prison gender change”, I like you, have mixed feelings about this. As a transgender woman myself, I can sympathize with her plight (the idea of being unable to live with the idea of being forced to live as a man, and that in prison to boot), BUT that sympathy is greatly tempered by the idea that she’s committed a HORRIBLE crime for which prison is the price she’s paying. I feel that if she’s serving life (with the possibility of parole), they may continue to provide hormone therapies, psych therapy and so forth until she’s paroled, then let her get her surgery when she’s released; I don’t think the taxpayers should pay for it. If She’s waiting for execution, what would be the point, when she’s headed for death? Either way, I believe she’s made her bed, and it’s her problem to lay in it.

I know this sounds hard, but I don’t hold with taking human life, and she did it in such a horrible manner, she’s living the consequences. After all, divorces are not that hard to get; I can see any reason that would justify killing her wife, short of self-defense, and apparently she was not able to prove that…going out to dinner as if it were nothing for an alibi might have something to do with that inability…

I haven’t read the particulars of this case, but from what you’ve said, I would think she’s forfeited the right to this sort of “adequate medical treatment” also.
