I was going to spend some time in creating a post about the transgender vs transsexual issue that going on facebook and other social media networks. Then I saw this wonder video from Cristen, president of the TG Center of America. she seem to sum up all my thoughts in this great video. Enjoy
I think people, particularly in the minority communities, are too individualistic in this era…women are focus on being independent feeling they dont need a man… This maybe true financial but there is something that happens when you put a masculine and femminine together in a team setting and its called balance. Men are forgetting where they should be in the family unit.It seem that having a family is not on many men life goals. Let take African Americans, as whole I think we are starting to believe the stigmas that are place on us so we dont trust each other…. so we dont support black business or each other because we are brainwashed in to thinking that if something is “Black” it is of less quality or integrity. Therefore they go and invest with the other races because they thinks the black folks not gonna do business right. You cane see it in the LGBT community as well. How many time have you heard someone say “Oh see that why I dont mess with the “kids”(means other LGBT members) they alway got some mess going on” Have you heard a transwoman say “Oh I dont hang around other transsexuals because its alway end up bad” I feel sometimes people say this in jest not realizing they are internalizing and passing on these negative feelings about their own demographic. Individualism is great for achieving success because you focus on you and your goalw. This does work well in that aspect but not for the community the individual is apart of. I think this is the reason why our minority cultures are moving into an individualistic state of mind and consequently less minority leaders have emerged. Yes we have some leaders and some people trying to uplift the group but not enough. The simple way to change this is to live our lives with integrity and support each other. I really think it is as simple that.
This is a interesting casting to say the least. I love Mary J. Blige and her voice. She has made her mark in the music industry as good vocalist, but is she an actress? I saw the movie starring her and Q-Tip which wa sin rotation only on BET, and I was not really impressed by her acting skills. I cant even recall the name of the movie. Bird Song maybe?
I think a better fit to play Nina Simone is Lauryn Hill. She has the voice, the spirit of consciousness, and that mysterious aura about her that would lend itself to make the role believable. I would even say India Arie would be a better pick for Nina Simone thanks Mary J. Blige.
Mary would really have to stretch her skills in both style of singing and acting. Nina is not a legendary because her sound was cookie cutter or easily mimicked. She was a legend because she was distinctive and a powerful civil right pioneer. I hope Mary can deliver that. If you think back to to when Diana Ross was slated to play Billie Holiday in “Lady Sing the Blues.” People were in a uproar about it. People said it was a horrible choice, both vocally and acting wise. Then what happen? Diana Ross gave a oscar nominating performance in a her dramatic film debut.
Although my initial thought is that this is not a good fit, as a Mary J. Blige fan, I hope she follows in the footsteps of Diana and knocks this role out the ballpark.
I think that a powerful element that boost the morale of an oppressed people is the history of the pioneers that came before the current generation. No matter how gruesome, knowing that your ancestors prevailed against dire adversity, keep the hope of a bright future alive. That is why the image of Martin Luther King Jr and his legacy prevailing is so important. Hold on though. This Diamond Stylz writing this. I am apart of a few cultures of oppressed people not just the African American one. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of equality was wonderful for the Black Civil Right movement and consequently the Sexual Revolution that start during that same time. The difference is that the stigma (based on religion of course) that surround the sexual revolution hindered much of the documentation of the history of pioneers in the sexual movement. Whereas race did not have that harsh of a stigma anymore so people documented the Civil Rights movement freely in literature and arts. One incident that proves my point is Toni Morrison‘s role in bringing the Black Feminist Movement in literature to the American mainstream. If Morrison did not work for Random House as an editor in 1966 some of the great writers of the era, like Angela Davis Gayl Jones, Toni Cade Bambara , would not have been published. Therefore these writers legacy and triumphs would not have been heard today by this generation. There stories empower the next generation. Were there people in that time promoting the LGBT cause like Toni? Im sure there were but very few
People suppressed our(LGBT) stories and triumphs which made our empowerment stagnant. Did you know that there was Black GAY Civil Right pioneer? Bayard Rustin was one. Bayard Rustin was one of the chief organizer of the March on Washington and one of the people that counseled Martin Luther King Jr in techniques on the non-violent approach in the movement. Only reason why Rustin was not one of the figurehead was because he was gay. Back then homosexuality was criminalized so people felt his sexual orientation would compromise the movement over all so he stayed behind the scenes allowing King and other to be in the forefront because they fit the less controversial image. So as a result gay teens today do not know that a gay-equivalent to King existed, so that boost of morale that could be there when getting bullied in the hall of a highschool is not there. I point this out not to undermine Martin Luther King Jr role as a martyr or powerful speaker for our progression but to point out that it was not just his dream. That dream was the dream of many, a tapestry of individual fighting for equality from all walks of life and struggle. As the LGBT community, we have to remember and find strength in the fact that a lot of our pioneers songs were unsung. We have to know that they were there in the trenches fight for the right that we have now sing the same Free At Last lyrics as the others. Even trans specifically have a pioneer to be proud of. Click to check out the story of Lady Java
The beauty of the internet and the current state of the world is not only that we can connect to people we would never had connected to around the world but that even the most minuscule occurrence can be record and documented. So our stories can be told and our pioneers in this generation do not have to be lost and unsung like the generation before us.
So Omarion allegedly comes out the closet…then goes back in. Raz B is air out all the fleet juiced, lubed-up dirty laundry of chris stokes, B2k, Ray J, Quindon Toliver and the rest of that crew. Raz B even goes in on Chris Brown.
But honestly who care if they are gay? They are musicians, producer and vocalist? Does it matter what they do in the private chambers of a bathhouse?Does that change the sound of their music? No. So why is their sexual orientation such a circus in the media.
This the reason download men cant come out the closet. they have str8 people AND GAY PEOPLE making a mockery of the lifestyles. I though that is what we were trying to over come.
I loved this song before this video BUT the fact that Marsha Ambrosius is so bold in her video concept on her second single garners much respect from me.
Take a listen and watch.
Angel is friend of mine from my hometown of Indianapolis. She was shot by a home invader in her face, chest, and leg. By the grace of God she is recovering. Here is how the story is being portrayed on the news Now some of the dialogue has been change because they will not call her by her birth name on my fucking blog.:
Police aren’t saying yet if they believe a victim’s sexual identity lead to a shooting late Sunday night. Angel Johnson was transgender. She was shot four times after a man kicked in her chained apartment door.
It happened at the Canterburry apartments around 10 p.m. Sunday. Two sisters were living inside an apartment there. One of them was shot multiple times by an intruder. The other was able to escape by jumping off their third-floor balcony. Neighbors wonder if shooting victim targeted due to sexual orientation
Fox59 News spoke to a neighbor, who says she is now scared for her life.
“When they broke into the apartment, they just started shooting,” she explained.
Police say 23-year-old Angel Johnson opened the door to the barrel of a gun. Investigators say the gunman broke through the chain lock and shot Angel multiple times in the face, chest and arms. He then took off.
Angel’s sister was also inside during the shooting, she jumped three stories off the balcony to escape. As neighbors worry for their safety, word is starting to spread about why the gunman may have targeted Angel.
“I’m scared to be out here because of numerous rumors about what’s actually going on and why they did it and that stuff,” the neighbor said.
Rumors that Angel was living as a woman but was born a man.
“I’ve heard it the whole time I’ve been out here. I’ve always called her a girl but I heard the same thing and that it was one of her man friends who came back and did it. She looks 100% woman to me.”
“She’s always been nice to see her like (crying) that. I’m very emotional. I feel bad for her, I really do. You would never think your neighbors have all that going on,” she said.
Lawrence police are still investigating this shooting. They say the gunman took off Sunday night. Detectives would not say yet if the gunman targeted the victim because of her sexual identity. We’ve learned the victim’s sister who jumped off the balcony, broke her ankles. No word on either of their conditions.
Now what they are not telling you in tis story is that Angel has a altercation with some of her neighbors involving one of their boyfriends. This lead to the neighbors getting arrested for assaulting Angel. 3 weeks later …Angel is shot 6 times face chest and leg. You do the math.
People always automatically assume that if a transsexual gets murder it about tricking and deception on their part. That is not alway the case. Some time people just don’t like the fact that we are getting attention or that we are bold enough to be ourselves their for the want to harm us
UPDATE: Angel called me today and gave me a bit more information about what went on and what lead to the attack, I discuss it in on of my video here. To add insult to injury, Angel apt complex proceeded with a speedy eviction of Angel. On the ground that she endangered the safety of the other tenants. WHAT THE FUCK….ANGEL WAS attacked by a home invader…how is she putting someone at risk or danger by being the victim. Now she is hiding out in undisclosed place recovering because the gunman is still free and now she is homeless
Supposedly she die in her own bed at her California home while sleeping. I hope when it is my time, that is the way I go. My condolence go out to her daughter, who is a good singer like her mother by the way.
I have loved Teena Marie since the first time i heard Fire and Desire with Rick James. I was young then and puberty hadnt ravished my vocal cord so i could hit every note with ease…lol. I would put my head through the collar of my T-shirt and let the fabric of the shirt hang down my back like some long sexy hair, then sing my heart out with a mop or broom as my microphone. Dont Judge Me…lol
Teena Marie is one of those staple people in my life that taught me that in the right environment, like music, race did not matter. light or dark didnt matter, str8 or curly hair didnt matter.
This is in memory or her. She definitely will be missed. I have loved this song since I was little. A classic song by her, enjoy.
Just in time for the holidays, the Senate repealed “Do ask, Dont Tell.” This a great victory for the LGBT community. It has been a long time coming. This law has effected many careers and lives. I remember doing a video on youtube a year ago with InTransHeart on Dan Choi when he lost his rank and position because he was gay. He was a highly decorated soldier thrown away by the military based on his sexual orientation and this horrid law. I always wonder about those people who lost their careers. I imagined going to college for 4 year, getting my degree. Then getting my masters and workin so hard to get to a specific level in your career, then out the blue someone says you cant do this career anymore because of who you slept with last night. That would be crazy.
What’s next though? This is a sigh of relief for the indviduals already serving in the military who are able to hide or avoid scruntiny, but what does this mean for the still patriotic soldiers and personel that were discharged when this silly law was in full effect? Will some of those good soldier or Arabic -speaking specialist be brought back? Will their dishonorable discharges be repealed as well? Hope that our military does the right thing and extend some positions and apologies to these famlies. This would give Wikileaks some good stuff to report instead of the dirty laundry.
